What’s the deal with Viral?

I’m going to be honest, I never understood the big deal about viral. However, I recently read about a Viral Film Festival and thought maybe it was time to give viral vids a chance. So I have picked two of my favorite videos to share- ‘T-mobile dance’ and ‘Evian Live Young’.

Both videos have had over 16 million YouTube views to date! For other popular viral videos, check out AdAge’s weekly Top 10 list. So I stand corrected- when done well, viral videos can actually be quite engaging. In these two cases, the videos were not outlandishly far-fetched and therefore brand recognition is still a possibility when recalling the videos.

Philips vs. contest

So I’m sure many of you skipped for joy when you finally saw the sun come out today, I know I did. That’s when I saw this Philips v. The Sun video (Philips team put a Wake Up Light in a rooster pen to see if he would wake and crow before the real sun came up)- I thought HOW appropriate. The experiment is a part of a new Twitter contest ‘Philips_Vs’ where users can suggest a similar idea to have a Philips product duke it out with anything you can imagine. I think this is a fantastic idea because not only is it a broad social campaign utilizing multiple channels, it forces people to check out Philips’ product line in order to come up with a creative duel idea. Be sure to watch the rooster video to see if it worked! Still not inspired to tweet your ideas? Check the website for more info.

AC/DC Excel spreadsheet Music Video

Although this last one has nothing to do with advertising or brands- it is pretty amazing that I had to share anyways! To promote their new album- ACDC has created the world’s first music video in Microsoft Excel. Just open the attached .xls file and if you have a security blocker, be sure to click the enable content button before you play video. If you still can’t get it to work, go to the site or watch it on YouTube. Amazing right?
